Bombarded as we are with information, stimulation and constant interruptions, it comes as no surprise that attention deficit disorder, or ADD, is becoming more of an adult malady than a childhood one. A quiet, focused mental state is not only unusual for most of us, but seems beyond the reach of many.

Granted, it's our own blasted fault. We've become indentured servants to our beeping, buzzing, crazy-making devices. You can argue that your work and lifestyle require keeping a smart phone in your hand at all times, but most of us can carve out unplugged oases in our day if we truly wish to do so.

And what should one do during some of these device-less interludes? Meditate. If you read me regularly, you know I've lauded the benefits of meditation repeatedly. But the evidence in its favor is now so compelling that I must beat this drum again.

In this frenzied modern age, meditation is one of those approaches, like exercise,Best Beautiful A-Line Princess Beading Embroidery Satin White Wedding Dress With Bowknot Strap sale. that will do more for body and soul than almost any other so-called self-help or self-improvement method. Just as regular exercise has proved to be the most powerful medicine for depression, so has meditation become the most potent treatment for what can only be called cognition on steroids.

The thing is that meditation doesn't even require as much time or energy as does physical activity. As little as 15 minutes a day is sufficient to realize substantial benefit.

Just find a quiet place where you're not likely to be disturbed, sit or recline (sitting helps avoid nodding off), and focus your awareness on your breathing. Inhale and exhale fully, but don't strain. When your mind wanders (it will), just bring it back to your breathing. No foul.

Some folks find it helps to repeat a phrase in their mind in sync with their breathing, such as "Be here (on inhale) now (on exhale)." Others just use one word, such as peace or calm.

Use a timer, maybe with a pleasant chime at the end, so you don't need to wonder about the clock. Set it for 15 to 20 minutes. Meditate.

Meditation makes optimal use of the mind-body connection and the power of thought to influence physical processes.

Then there are the cognitive and emotional benefits: better concentration, improved memory, reduced stress and anxiety, less impulsivity, more confidence and so on. What exercise does for the body, meditation does for the brain and mind.

I'll take the former.

In our quest for wellness, we usually give more time and resources to body than to brain, and while both deserve our attention, without a healthy mind, the benefits of being physically fit are insufficient to create true well-being.
