Of Cabbages and Kings: The year of the wedding

On Sunday we traveled to Seattle for a double engagement party of two sisters whom we’ve known since their birth at the hospital of which my wife was director of nursing. Our daughter, who will be married late this year, joined us. 

Weddings and their attendant festivities are about family, of course. But also about extended networks of friends. We joined Seattlites in our friends’ intimate backyard, and many of them had links to our years in Washington, D.C. 

One of our friends’ daughters and her fiance said they are attending 10 weddings this year. 

Arriving in Seattle by train was a special thrill because King Street Station’s restoration is complete. After years of creeping progress and frequent stops, the magnificent railway station interior is a jaw dropper. As the long stream of passengers walked from our train into the station, many of us stopped to gaze upward at the coffered ceiling, the custom chandelier and the exquisite mosaics around the base of supporting columns.

To those of us outside Seattle, it was a mystery why this project took so long. After all, Seattle is loaded with wealth, and it is well wired into Olympia and Washington, D.C. 

But all’s well that ends well. 

As KMUN progresses through its late summer fundraiser, I am reminded that jazz is my strongest tie to the station. Every time I hear Chis Gilde, Ben Hunt or Ron Baldwin I am thankful for their store of jazz lore and their wide-ranging musical tastes. The occasional jazz show hostings by Josh Marquis and Roger Rocka are special treats. When Roger hosts, it’s like having a supper club in your kitchen. 

We indulged our jazz enthusiasms while in Seattle by hearing the Stanley Clarke Band at Jazz Alley. Clarke is a fixture in the contemporary jazz pantheon, and he wisely endures by an infusion of young blood. Clarke told the Seattle audience that his drummer on Sunday night was 19. His piano player was 29. 

Clarke plucks the bass like it is a guitar.
